Quote(s) of the Day: That is a monsterous fish, its so big it doesn't even look like a fish!

Fishing Highlights:

We had a really fun 1/2 day in the upper canyon stretch of SBC - hiking into the wilds! Hiking down into the canyon is always such a treat, getting away from civilization and spending time chasing big fish in pocket water. Ann and Deb started hooking fish right off the bat in the granite wall run. The fish in this section are still, for the most part, grouped up in the deeper, longer runs. However, I was really stoked to see Tim catch a wiley rainbow is some faster riffle water - a sign the fish are spreading out and moving for hatching insects. The bugs really are starting to come off - we saw prolific hatches of caddis and BWOs. Deb and I did a mini-clinic on long cast dry fly fishing and I was shocked to see a lot of fish eat the Amy's Ant - it was so cool! It was also fun to introduce the Single Haul, Double Haul, and reach mend casting techniques. We primarily fished deep nymph rigs and it consistently produced fish - Ann hooked a HUGE fish mid canyon - EPIC.

The water is open and running clear take advantage of some great Colorado fly fishing. The fish have not seen any presentations in quite a while and as a result are taking dry flies on the surface. Nymph rigs are producing the majority of fish. Blue winged olive mayflies and midges are the primary hatches. For productive prospecting try using a dry dropper pattern to cover the pocket water. Streamers are turning the headers of some of the larger fish in the canyon. Be sure to look out for rainbow trout spawning in shallow riffles. The fish are beginning to look up, try prospecting with bigger dry flies to draw strikes on the surface. Make sure you get a few more spring days in before the water begins to flow too high! Use extreme caution when wading as the water is coming down fast. Big flies are catching the attention of the fish. Use big and bright San Juan Worms, Eggs, Stoneflies and leeches. Make sure you have a good and sturdy net to land big fish in fast current.  The fishing is good.  Clear skies and 56-59 degree weather. The water temperature was between 44-47 degrees and Slightly Off.
