Fishing Highlights:

After chilly overnight temperatures the sun broke out and begin to warm quickly for us. John had his friend Mark from Iowa in town for a couple of days of fishing. John started off the usual way by taking a couple of fish right off the bat. Mark is new to the sport ,so after a few minutes of instruction and drifts he was fly fishing. It did not take him long before he hooked and landed his first fish. It just so happened to be a twenty one inch rainbow. Nicely done Mark! We went back and fourth from dry droppers to nymphs all morning. John found a nice little hole where he took several nice fish on dry droppers. The afternoon brought more of the same with fish being taken on both rigs. Mark set up in a nice run and was fishing a dry dropper rig. We went over the technique a little more. Right away fish started to eat both the dry and the droppers. It was amazing to watch Mark make the drifts that the fish wanted. It all came together for him at that moment. I will see you both tomorrow

This is some of the best fly fishing in Colorado! For best results start nymphing with small imitations using hook sizes 18-22.  Switch to dries and emergers when you see fish suspended just below the surface or actively rising. The Ice is out! The bite is on at both rivers and lakes! The rainbow and cut-bow in our waters have begun spawning. Fish egg patterns imitating both fresh (red eggs) and dead eggs (pale pinkish eggs). Concentrate your efforts on the biggest and deepest holes in the river.  Lots of stoneflies are on the move! Nymph fish the fast water with patterns like a Pat’s rubber legs (size 10-16) or1 a Canyon Stone (size 10-16). Look for fish holding anywhere there is structure especially eddies and log jams. Fly fishing is good but the water is cold! Be sure and bring a quality pair of waist high waders and studded boots!  The fishing is good.  Clear skies and 56-59 degree weather. The water temperature was between 40-43 degrees and Crystal Clear.
