Quote(s) of the Day: That fish isn't a fish - it's a mutant, it's huge!

Fishing Highlights:

Don and I had a great day on the water; Placer and Canyon beat fished very well with the standard nymph rig setup and we experimented with several other techniques that worked great as well. It was really cool to see Don catch fish on a Euro Rig, Dry fly, soft hackles, streamers and nymphs. Trout of all sizes are starting to spread out into the riffles but for the most part, we found the bulk of fish in the deeper runs. The caddis and BWO hatch emerges in early afternoon encompassed with great fishing and followed by a mid afternoon lull. The streamer brought a monster out of a deep plunge pool that made us both laugh in amazement. Upper canyon fished really well and at the end of the day Don landed a big male rainbow with a large kype - a good sign of successful spawning. Overall a sunny warm day full of hooking fish, netting fish and enjoying all the time in between.

Good hatches of Midges and Blue Winged Olives are prevalent.  For best results start nymphing with small imitations using hook sizes 18-22.  Switch to dries and emergers when you see fish suspended just below the surface or actively rising. Lots of stoneflies are on the move! Nymph fish the fast water with patterns like a Pat’s rubber legs (size 10-16) or1 a Canyon Stone (size 10-16). Midges and Mayflies are the name of the game. Try nymphing with proven patterns like the Zebra Midge, Barr’s Emerger, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, and Pandemic Mayfly! Watch out for spawning beds! These areas can be easily identified by shallow light colored depressions usually found on or near long riffles. A wading staff may be of use during this high water season. To fish effectively find the bottom of the river and then fish up. Remember the fish are holding deep, to fish effectively cover the water thoroughly.  The fishing is great.  Clear skies and 56-59 degree weather. The water temperature was between 40-43 degrees and Slightly Off.
