Quote(s) of the Day: “We caught a lot of nice, healthy fish today!”

Fishing Highlights:

Today was a typical Colorado day of the unknown with weather. The forecast showed rain/snow and colder temps, but up here at Lincoln hills could mean anything being at a higher elevation. The start of the day was a slow start as far as fishing as expected, with cold overnight temps which had the fish pretty lazy. But when the sun popped up and water temps bumped a couple degrees the fish became active. Rick ran a deep nymph rig with plenty of weight to get down through the fast water and where the fish were at. The morning was great with a lot of fish put in the net. The highlight of the morning was a 22” cutty right before the lunch hour. After a much needed break to warm our feet we went back out to see what the afternoon would bring and I’ll say, it was a little silly as far as the fishing goes. Blue winged olives started coming off with the low pressure system and Rick put the bend in the rod all afternoon. It was a banner day on Lincoln hills!

This is some of the best fly fishing in Colorado! Good hatches of Midges and Blue Winged Olives are prevalent.  For best results start nymphing with small imitations using hook sizes 18-22.  Concentrate your efforts on the biggest and deepest holes in the river.  Look for fish holding anywhere there is structure especially eddies and log jams. We are catching some of the biggest rainbow trout of the year! To better your odds of hooking trout try nymph fishing with a three fly rig. To fish effectively find the bottom of the river and then fish up. Remember the fish are holding deep, to fish effectively cover the water thoroughly. Make sure you are snagging bottom every five casts or so, this will ensure that your flies are getting down deep to the fish. The river is looking superb another great summer of fishing is just around the corner.  The fishing is fantastic.  Overcast skies and 40-43 degree weather. The water temperature was between 36-39 degrees and Slightly Off.
