Quote(s) of the Day: The first day of the year is always so full and exciting - from seeing old faces and catching up to getting on the river and dusting off the cobwebs. It's just great to be out here in the mountains.

Fishing Highlights:

I knew today was going to be great because I had the pleasure of fishing with TommyT and his soon to be 'USC' son Tyler. Fishing with these guys always reminds me that having a great attitude is a large contributing factor to success on the water. Flows jumped overnight to 130cfs and we took on the Lincoln Hills beat with vigor, pursuing trout in fast water with heavy nymph rigs and downstream streamer techniques. Synonymous with recent experience, the fish were sluggish for about an hour but as the sun rose higher, the fish intensely woke up. We netted a few dozen on a variety of flies from realistic beatis imitations to attractor flies like the san juan worm. There were moments that seemed like we couldn't do anything wrong. The afternoon reflected the morning in opposite fashion, as the fishing remained strong until about 3:00pm and slowly waned as the water cleared up and dropped. We caught so many beautiful, strong big fish today - it was practically perfect.

This is some of the best fly fishing in Colorado! Good hatches of Midges and Blue Winged Olives are prevalent.  Switch to dries and emergers when you see fish suspended just below the surface or actively rising. With the water running fast the fish are clinging to the bottom so be sure and bring lots of split shot and heavily weighted flies. Lots of stoneflies are on the move! Nymph fish the fast water with patterns like a Pat’s rubber legs (size 10-16) or1 a Canyon Stone (size 10-16). Midges and Mayflies are the name of the game. Try nymphing with proven patterns like the Zebra Midge, Barr’s Emerger, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, and Pandemic Mayfly! Watch out for spawning beds! These areas can be easily identified by shallow light colored depressions usually found on or near long riffles.  The fishing is great.  Clear skies and 52-55 degree weather. The water temperature was between 40-43 degrees and Slightly Off.
