Quote(s) of the Day: Today was a good day with good weather, good fishing and great friends!

Fishing Highlights:

It's been a year since I fished with Dave and Bill and I was lucky to meet back up with them today and their buddy Marty. I really anticipated fishing a new section of river, ESPY ranch, with the guys and was happy to see they still know how to throw a rod like pros. Right off the bat Bill caught a handful of wild brownies and a solid 15" bow. Dave followed suit, hooking at least a half dozen in each run and ended up landing a few larger fish. Marty and I worked on the finer points of pocket water casting such as the 'C' cast and reach mend casts. We caught one fish on the swing that ate the soft hackle caddis and then soft hackle pheasant tail - its amazing how even under the tension of the swing the fish ate the flies so fast that the strike was only detected on one fly. We caught fish all day in all ways - dry/drop, nymphing and double dry. The cherry on top was fresh, ripe, wild raspberries ready for harvest along the banks all day.

Summer is a dry fly fisher’s paradise in the canyon! Look for fish to be spread out throughout the water. Dry dropper rigs are by far producing the most fish. Most of the fish are rising readily to dry flies. The fish are responding well to all kinds of angling techniques. Get to the water now in order to experience some of the best insect hatches of the year. Stimulators, hoppers and other big gaudy attractor patterns are fooling fish. Make sure your dropper is heavy enough to get down quick. Our pro guides are writing fly fishing reports about all kinds of insects! We are seeing all stoneflies, mayflies, caddis and of course midges.  The stonefly hatch has been fantastic. Look for these big bugs to hatch sporadically throughout the day. Lots of mayfly species are hatching in prolific numbers. The guides say anglers can expect to see caddis hatches in the early afternoons and late evenings. Try swinging caddis pupa and fishing dry fly imitations like an Elk Hair Caddis with a bead head dropper.  The fishing is fantastic.  Clear skies and 19- degree weather. The water temperature was between 56-59 degrees and Crystal Clear.
