Quote(s) of the Day: This fished very well considering how high the water was.

Fishing Highlights:

South boulder creek is still in run-off and probably will be for a few more weeks. We have seen the flows fluctuate from 1350-700 CFS over the last couple of weeks. Hot days and mountain thunderstorms over the weekend changed the conditions from one day to the next. However, the river still fished well considering the conditions. Today it was about finding the softest water possible and using enough weight to get the flies to feeding fish below. We used a combo of dry/dropper rigs and indicator nymph rigs to get the job done. Presley was on the board quickly with a nice little cut bow and once we found where they were, the fishing continued to be good in the morning. Laura picked up a 13" rainbow for her first fish on the fly using a dry/dropper rig, running very close to the edge. The fishing in the afternoon picked up and we hooked a large portion of our fish at this time. We had periods where the water would muddy and the fish would turn off, but then pick back up.

The rainbow and cut-bow in our waters have begun spawning. Fish egg patterns imitating both fresh (red eggs) and dead eggs (pale pinkish eggs). With the water running fast the fish are clinging to the bottom so be sure and bring lots of split shot and heavily weighted flies. Look for fish holding anywhere there is structure especially eddies and log jams. Fly fishing is good but the water is cold! Be sure and bring a quality pair of waist high waders and studded boots! Eggs! Make sure to bring an assortment of egg patterns like Glo Bugs and Nuclear Eggs in an assortment of different colors and sizes. Be careful out there! Here comes the water, even most tail water streams outside of Denver are running dangerously high! Wading is difficult but the fishing is still good. The water is now high enough that you can nymph fish the bigger holes effectively from the bank. A wading staff may be of use during this high water season. Here comes the water for Denver! Lots of water is coming down from the mountains! Fast current, off color water and lots of debris makes seeing your indicator difficult.   The fishing is good.  Partly Cloudy skies and 56-59 degree weather. The water temperature was between 36-39 degrees and Off-Color.
