Quote(s) of the Day: "Fly fishing is so much fun"!

Fishing Highlights:

The weather was a little bit chilly early this morning. It didn't take very long to warm up though. The flow was bumped up to 170 as well. All that being said it did not take Carter very long to make contact with the first fish of the day. It was Carter's and Ed's first time ever fly fishing. After we lost the first one, we had a short instruction on how to hang on to the fish. Next cast Carter put his first fish in the net. Bob made his way up river just a little .He used a streamer rig that the fish could not say no to. He hooked six fish right away. Meanwhile Carter and Ed stayed hooked up on a nymph rig. The afternoon stayed just a consistent. Carter hooked a nice rainbow, then another on the same rig one of them went one way and the other went the other and we were left with one fish and a broken down rig. We went to a dry dropper until I could get the nymph rig back together. He took a couple of nice fish on that rig as well. Thanks to everyone for a great day.

This is some of the best fly fishing in Colorado! For best results start nymphing with small imitations using hook sizes 18-22.  Switch to dries and emergers when you see fish suspended just below the surface or actively rising. The rainbow and cut-bow in our waters have begun spawning. Fish egg patterns imitating both fresh (red eggs) and dead eggs (pale pinkish eggs). With the water running fast the fish are clinging to the bottom so be sure and bring lots of split shot and heavily weighted flies. Watch out for spawning beds! These areas can be easily identified by shallow light colored depressions usually found on or near long riffles. Late spring temperatures are running high around Denver and the surrounding Western Slope. Get in some time right now before the water begins to blow out! The water is now high enough that you can nymph fish the bigger holes effectively from the bank. A wading staff may be of use during this high water season. The streamer bight has been on! Try using wooly buggers, double bunnies, muddler minnows, and articulated streamers such as the sex dungeon or sculpzilla.  Try using a large Thin-a-ma-bobber in a bright color. The large size will keep your flies suspended and the bright color such as orange or red should be easy to see in the raging river! The river is looking superb another great summer of fishing is just around the corner.  The fishing is great.  Partly Cloudy skies and 56-59 degree weather. The water temperature was between 40-43 degrees and Slightly Off.
