PRO’S FISHING REPORT DEBUT

By Ryan Sullivan, Guide Service Director

As part of The Flyfisher Guide Service Newsletter, we are excited to include our Pro’s Report, featuring our favorite stretches of water and a link to our updated fishing reports on both private and public water. This will be available with the launch of the Flyfisher’s new web site - http://theflyfisher.com Now that winter has finally settled in, many of you might be restocking fly boxes, building your first handcrafted fly rod, or even packing your bags for your next trip to Andros, the Yucatan, or some other warm water latitude. All of this said, spring is just around the corner and in the meantime, you will find us chasing fish on regional tailwaters, enjoying the open water and a chance to fish in the occasional snowfall. Keep in mind that a lower barometer level can equate to more actively feeding fish during the winter so don’t be afraid to take a break from the vice and head to the river.

Give us a call to join you out there or just to share some of our tried and true tactics for fishing lower and clearer water, micro sized midges, and maybe even find a few fish rising to Baetis! Stay tuned for our next edition of The Flyfisher Guide Service Newsletter and the Pro’s Report, where we will keep you up to speed on what has been hot, where we have been fishing, and as always, what you can be doing to catch more fish.

ANGLING UNIVERSITY’S UPCOMING CLASSES

By Ethan Emery, Angling University Director

Angling University is a full - scale fly fishing school offering classes and lessons in fly fishing, fly tying, and casting. Angling University offers a curriculum for all ages and experience levels. Our new facility located above Trout’s Fly Fishing retail store (1303 East 6th Ave) will allow us to provide the most convenient downtown fly fishing learning center in the metro area. Whether it’s teaching children, learning to dry fly fish for western trout, mastering the art of casting in saltwater, learning to tie your own flies, or building/repairing rods we have the instructors and classes for you. We offer fly fishing classes year round for all experience levels from those who have never touched a rod to experts. If you would prefer a one - on - one learning experience we can accommodate all levels with private fishing lessons, casting clinics, and tying lessons. Need a quick refresher before a fishing trip? We are here to help. If you have dreamed of tying your own flies, look at the schedule over the next few months. All of our classes are taught by professional fly tying and casting instructors. Every class is designed to maximize the best student to teacher ratio.

2008 Winter Classes

  • Beginner Fly Tying - 4 - week class. 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. 4 classes per month. January is sold out. February has 2 openings.
  • Fly Fishing 101 - 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. $50
  • Learn To Fly Fish In One Day (Fly Fish 102) - We have two versions of this class. Both classes start in the classroom, but the Denver class uses the lower South Platte River as its “testing grounds” at the end of the day, whereas the traditional class utilizes Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing Club in Pinecliffe, CO. The Lincoln Hills location has been our most popular class, and everybody who has taken the class has caught fish during class time.
  • Private Fishing Lessons - A new offering. Different from a guide trip in that all of the attention is focused on improving the students skills, not just catching fish. These can take place on any of our world class public waters, and can be designed to focus on whatever the angler chooses. Lessons start at $225.

WHAT’S BITING???

By Anthony Bartkowski

Winter has finally come to the Rocky Mountains, and you have the urge to wet a line but are not sure where. One of the best features of Colorado is the number of tailwaters that remain open for those of us with the itch. Some of the tricks to winter fishing are watching the weather consistently, you can visit our fishing reports for current weather conditions at specific locations. Good times to get out - several warm days in a row of 40 degree weather, and/or the barometer drops. The ideal time to fish in the winter is between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Stalk the fish. The water levels are low and the clarity is supreme this time of year. The presentation of your flies has be pretty much dead on as the fish are not going to expend any extra energy for your tasty offering. If the sun is hitting the river on one side, make sure to look closely here, as the fish are more than likely located here to warm up.

Below is an offering of locations to try in January, February, and March. If you are not sure which one to try, give us a call or send an email.

  • The South Platte River in downtown Denver and is an excellent Carp fishery.
  • Arkansas River below Pueblo Reservoir or in downtown Pueblo.
  • Big Thompson River in Wapiti Valley below the dam in Estes Park.
  • Waterton Canyon
  • Cheesman Canyon or Deckers
  • Blue River in Silverthorne - Take your wife or significant another for outlet shopping while you fish. There are ample bars and restaurants around the area for post fishing entertainment.
  • Fry Pan River below Reudi Reservoir in Basalt, CO
  • Taylor River below the Taylor Reservoir - monitor weather closely.
