The Flyfisher in the News: Outdoor news
When you say "big"... Not that Matthew Burkett is, uh, greedy or anything. It's just sort of natural among fishermen that when you land a nice fish but spot something larger, you always wonder what it might have been like to catch the really big one. So here's Burkett on July 25, floating through that remarkable stretch of private water on the Blue River below Green Mountain Reservoir - generally referred to as Jurassic Park for the scary size of the trout that live there. Burkett, who owns the The Flyfisher Guide Service in Denver, gets his hands around a rainbow trout that measures 33 inches long with a 25-inch girth and calculates at a cool 25.8 pounds - perhaps the largest rainbow landed in Colorado. Thing is, just before he hooks it, he sees two other trout in the same hole that are considerably bigger. Oh, well. "I'd seen photos of trout 14 or 15 pounds from that stretch, but I didn't know there were any that big," said Burkett, who tempted the lunker with a red leather leech, landed it inside five minutes and released it.

The Flyfisher Guide Service and our New Sister Shops
2006 promises be the most exciting year for The Flyfisher since it changed ownership in 2000. We have eliminated the retail shop in an effort to focus on what we do best. Our new focus has allowed us to partner with three local fly shops. This will expand the reach and convenience of our services and provide you with a base of true specially retailers that can meet your needs in a shrinking market. This axis will be an asset to our ever expanding client base. We are proud to announce Charlie's Fly Box, Denver Angler and Trout's Fly Fishing as our new Sister Shops. Our Guide Services and Angling University will be featured in these shops and will be branding jointly with these shops as we work to create a network of specialty retailers to serve our clientele.

Fishin' Buddies: A New Concept in Guided Trips
Fly fishing has always drawn on the quiet side of my soul. Those days with epic hatches where I am the only one on the river are days I will never forget... or will I. Many of my best days were spent fishing alone, especially after my father and fishin' buddy passed away. After all it was more fun to share those days with him and it is those memories that I think will truly last forever, if only because they were replayed so many time between us. The desire to provide that opportunity to others is the driving force behind a new brand of guided outings.
Fishin' Buddies - The heart of the brand, these outings are designed to give you the opportunity to fish our best private waters, meet other anglers and get a discount in the process. The program is available in the off season when rod fees are reduced. This is a fully guided trip from tying your knots to helping you land you fish. If you have always wanted to fish our great private water this is a great opportunity for you to see what you have been missing. We want you to meet other anglers like yourself and make a connection with a new fishin' buddy.
Guide Fish - This is an outing designed to give you the opportunity to fish with our guides. We only run this program in the off season when fishing conditions are the toughest. You tie your own knots, land your own fish and learn from seeing how our guides do it. If you fish regularly on your own this is a great opportunity for you to fish private water at a great price. If you need help with your knots and other general fishing skills, this is not the trip for you. There is no better way to learn those little tricks of the trade than to watch an expert in action. This is your chance to learn from the pros in action.
Couples Club - This program seeks to get couples out on the water together. What better way to spend a day with your loved one. We all know that the more things we can find to do together, the stronger our relationships will be. Don't miss the opportunity to meet other couples and enjoy the company of your partner.
Family Fish - Like our Couples Club we want families to spend time together also. There is something for everyone on the river and even the teenagers get a kick out of hooking those trout. Groups of two to 3 families are paired up and sent out fishing for the day.
Kids Club - Designed as a mini-summer camp this two day program is meant to introduce kids to fishing. Each child will receive a fish rod and reel that they will be able to take home. There will be a structured program covering fish, bug, weather and safety. The actual fishing will be done with a fly and a bubble.
Catchers Club - A singles fishing outing were you could meet the one or maybe just the next one. This is a relaxed setting where connections can be made and we don't just mean with fish!

The FlyFisher Retail Shop Closes the Doors After 35 Years
The following is the letter that was posted on the door of the oldest fly shop in Denver. As a fly fishing community how do we continue to deal with the shrinking number of fly shops? You would think that with all the big time outdoor retailers moving into the Denver market the forecast must be good for retailers in general. This however, has not proven to be the reality for specialty fly shops. In the past three years at least nine shops have closed their doors. We have lost The Complete Angler, Plum Creek Angler, Alpine Angler, The Trout Fisher, all three St. Vrain Anglers, The Evergreen Hatch and The Flyfisher Retail Shop. So few fly shops remain in the metro area that those looking for a new home fly shop are pressed to find one. This is the time for the few remaining specially shops to unite and fortify a customer base that the big box retailers will never be able to woo away. Read the story about our Sister Shops if you are looking for a new shop.
To Our Customers: For 35 years The Flyfisher Ltd. has been servicing the fly fishing and hunting community of Denver and its surrounding areas. In that 35 year history the company has seen three owners and three locations all of which brought new and exciting changes to our small operation. With every change came new challenges and successes. Unfortunately, some good things do not last forever. Recent changes in the Denver retail environment, tough economic times, and personal challenges have brought forth the decision to close the doors of The Flyfisher Ltd. retail operation. For some this may come as a shock, to others it might have seemed inevitable. The truth of the situation is that up until the point of writing this letter it has been my goal to keep The Flyfisher Ltd. going and find ways to make it a stronger and better specialty retail shop. Changes in the fly fishing and outdoor industries have been on the horizon for the past few years and plans to sell and or move the shop were always options but recently all plans came up against challenges that were insurmountable. In the end it came down to the fact no matter how much you may want to save something at some point it is just time to let it go. Fortunately, The Flyfisher Guide Service will continue to operate under the leadership of Matthew Burkett who has been running the guide service for the past two years. My deepest thanks go out to all of our customers who have been loyal to the shop over the past 35 years. Without our customers we would have never made it all of these wonderful years. From a truly personal perspective I must say that our customers are what made this business so special and are defiantly people I will never forget.
Many thanks to all and Tight Lines, Peter duPont, The Flyfisher Retail Ltd.
